How to read these ranges
Bat Digest says its ranges come from HitTrax and Rapsodo readings of more than 50,000 swings over seven years, across ordinary youth and high school players, not only showcase players. It does not publish the spread behind them, so this page gives no percentile. The ranges overlap, so a number can be inside the average and the good goal at once.
A tee maximum is the hardest ball a hitter can hit with no pitch to time. Bat Digest notes that exit velocity in a game usually runs 5 to 10 mph lower. Compare a hitter with their own readings, taken the same way. For pitchers, see pitching velocity by age.
Questions
- What is a good exit velocity for a 13 year old?
- Bat Digest puts the average best tee exit velocity for 13 and 14-year-olds at 60-75 mph, a good goal at 70-80 mph, and its top 10% at 80+ mph.
- What is the average exit velocity in high school?
- In Bat Digest’s ranges, the average for 15 and 16-year-olds is 70-85 mph and for 17 and 18-year-olds 75-90 mph, off a tee. Exit velocity in a game is usually lower.
- Why is there no percentile for exit velocity?
- No study we could find publishes the spread of exit velocity for each age, which a percentile needs. Rather than make one up, the tool shows which published range a number falls in, and whose range it is.
- Does Baseball Tracker measure exit velocity?
- No. The app estimates pitch speed, bat speed and sprint speed from phone video. It does not measure exit velocity, so these ranges are not from its readings.
Measure yours free with Baseball Tracker
Film a pitch, a swing or a run to first on your phone and the app reads the pitch speed, bat speed or sprint speed from the video, keeps every reading, and shows how it changes over a season. The readings are estimates from video, not a radar gun.

Where the numbers come from
The ranges are restated from Bat Digest’s published chart, not from Baseball Tracker’s measurements. No percentile is given because no source publishes the spread needed for one.
